One of the worlds most iconic cruise ships the Queen Elizabeth 2 could be headed to the Thames in a proposed move to save her from the scrap heap. For almost 40 years Cunard's QE2 travelled the world's seas , she even served as a troop carrier in the Falklands but, following her retirement in 2008, the much loved QE2, is now under threat of being broken up .

After she retired, the QE2 headed to Dubai with the view to open as an international tourist attraction. Due to the global recession, development stalled and she has not moved since.  The current owners are said to be in talks with China about stripping it for scrap metal. But it is hoped that this can be prevented by moving the ship to London and transforming it into a luxury hotel. The QE2 would be loaded with enough ballast to sit on the tidal river bed and open as a five-star hotel with tours for the public.

It would be an expensive operation because the QE2 is unlikely to be able to make the voyage from Dubai under her own power after a long lay-up.This would be a very popular move for the thousands of people who fell in love with her. Almost 1,000 people have already signed an official e-petition urging the Government to support the 'QE2 London' project.

So can this ambitious project be pulled off? Or is it just another pipe dream? Only time will tell. One thing is certain however, a ship as iconic as the QE2 deserves a better fate than the scrapyard!
